Protecting Vulnerable People

Some people -- especially those with weakened immune systems or who are especially vulnerable because of their age, genetics or other factors -- are more threatened by drinking water contamination, even if the water meets federal and state standards.

Who Could Be More Vulnerable?

  • People undergoing chemotherapy or living with HIV/AIDS
  • Transplant patients
  • Children and infants
  • The frail elderly
  • Pregnant women and their fetuses
  • Federal regulations require every Right to Know Report to include a warning statement about vulnerable people, with an emphasis on Cryptosporidium and other microbial contamination. In addition, some people (such as young children) may be more vulnerable to certain chemical & other contaminants such as pesticides, nitrate and lead.

To learn more about these and other water contaminants that can threaten certain people, please read the following fact sheet.
